Car accidents are upsetting, frightening, and worrisome experiences that no one should ever have to endure. Unfortunately, most people get into at least one car accident at some point in their lives.

It’s important to know what to say and do in the event of an accident. Additionally, you should know what not to say and do in such a circumstance.

Keep reading to learn what you shouldn’t say after being involved in a car accident.

3 Phrases to Avoid After an Accident

#1 - “I’m sorry.”

When something bad happens, it is in our nature to want to apologize for the incident, even if we didn’t cause the problem. However, saying sorry after a car accident can be seriously harmful to your claim.

While apologizing may feel like the right thing to do at the moment, it’s wise to avoid this urge. Apologizing to those involved in the accident can be seen as admitting fault for the incident. Even if it isn’t your intention to assign yourself blame for the accident, apologizing for it can do just that.

#2 - “I’m not injured.”

It’s common for injured accident victims not to feel any pain after a wreck. Your body does everything possible to protect you, and can even block the pain of your injuries while you are in a state of shock.

You may not feel the pain of your injuries for hours, days, or even weeks after the accident. Resist stating that you are not injured until after you’ve been cleared by your doctor or another medical professional.

#3 - “I don’t have a lawyer.”

Even if you don’t plan to hire an attorney, it’s still best not to advertise that fact. Other people involved in the accident and their insurance companies may try to take advantage of you if you declare that you’re not working with an attorney.

If you don’t have a lawyer, say that you are considering your options for representation. That way, others involved in the accident know that they won’t be able to exploit you.
