How Dangerous Can School Parking Lots Be?

How Dangerous Can School Parking Lots Be?

School parking lots are a destination that teens all around the country are heading to more frequently. As school has gotten back in session, many students will be in person for the first time in a while.

The team at Shapiro Law Firm, P.A. has laid out a few facts and tips to keep your young one safe in one of the most dangerous areas they will drive in their adolescence.

1. Do Not Recklessly Driving in a School Zone

The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles is very serious about ensuring that all drivers know how to get around school zones and improve roadway safety when children are present. As such, the state has laws specific to school zones, including:

  • The speed limit is 25 mph when within 500 to 1000 feet of a school zone unless otherwise posted.
  • As mentioned previously, cellphone use is prohibited when driving in California but especially in school zones where children are present.
  • School crossing guards have the authority in a school zone, so pay attention if they give you directions or are in the roadway.

2. Watch for Pedestrians and Bicyclists

Pedestrians and cyclists in traffic are not uncommon during the school year. In both rural and urban areas, you can expect more families to use this mode of transport. While most school zone laws apply to areas within 300 yards of the schoolyard, drivers should watch out for pedestrians and cyclists within a mile or more. If you pass someone by bike or on foot, slow down and leave at least three feet of clearance as required by state law.

3. The Easiest Defensive Driving Techniques for Teens

The first trip back to school can be stressful for a new driver, but thinking about defensive driving techniques can help you in a difficult situation. Some of the easiest things to remember are:

  • Avoid getting behind the wheel when you feel sad, angry, or tired.
  • Keep a distance of three seconds between you and the car in front of you (increase this distance in bad weather).
  • Even if you are late for school, avoid exceeding the speed limit as it may increase the risk of losing control of the vehicle.
  • Be vigilant and continuously scan the roadway for potential hazards.
  • Keep your seat belt fastened when entering the school parking lot.

Commit to roadway safety this back-to-school season by practicing all of these tips and tricks.
